The late Dr. Tom O’Connor was an enthusiastic supporter of NUIG Energy night from the very beginning and presented the award at last year’s event.

Energy systems lecturer Rory Monaghan says: ‘Due to his legacy as an early pioneer and his enthusiasm and support for the student energy community, we decided to name the annual prize for best student research poster at the annual Energy Night conference in his honour.’

Dr. O’Connor graduated in physics from UCD. In 1956, after a period of research in the Meteorology and Geophysics Section of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, he joined the then Department of Physics in UCG where he initiated a research programme in Atmospheric and Environmental Physics. After the Department had moved to its current premises in 1973 he led a project on wind energy with local industrialists.

As a member of the NUIG Environmental Energy Utilisation group he collaborated with the New University of Ulster in Coleraine, the ESB and industrial interests on an investigation of the use of air-source heat pumps for domestic space and water heating.

He was involved with the Solar Energy Society of Ireland from its formation in the 1970s and from 1980 to 1991 he ran an annual seminar in Galway on several aspects of renewable energy.

In more recent times he had been involved in thermal comfort studies in connection with research and teaching in Occupational Hygiene. Dr. O'Connor passed away in November 2012.

Energy Night 2012: Industry & Careers Fair

  • Platform to network with students, researchers, interested members of the public, and other bodies involved in the energy sector
  • Companies will also benefit from publicity outside of the event itself, as they will be listed in the event programme and on our website in the ensuing 12 months
Details:
  • Each company will be provided with a display space to showcase their particular work - props welcome pending space restrictions
  • A pre-event launch for company members will take place at 11am with access to the venue from 12pm
  • The Industry and Careers Fair will then run from 2 – 5pm and all participants are invited to attend the panel discussion thereafter
